But arithmetic is as little psychological as astronomy. In the same way in which astronomy is concerned with the planets, not with our representations of planets, the objects of study of arithmetic are not representations. Frege adds,66 however, that if the objects of study of arithmetic were the representations of numbers, not the numbers themselves, such representations would be only mine, since the representation that another person has is as such different from mine. Thus, in that case there would be millions of twos, since there are millions of representations of twos.

Such distinctions motivate Frege to examine very briefly the ontological proof of God’s existence. 13 Frege conceives the attribution of existence – as he does with numerical attributions – as a second order predication. To assert the existence of something is nothing other than to deny the attribution of the number 0 to a concept. Thus, when we say that there are Germans, we are just saying that the number 0 does not correspond to the concept of ‘being a German’, that is, we negate the content of the statement that nothing falls under that concept.

In fact, in the second volume of Grundgesetze der Arithmetik19 Frege argues that we cannot obtain the referents of the component parts of statements even if we know not only the referent of the whole statement, but also the referent of the remaining component part. 21 3 The Classification of Statements In section 3 of Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik Frege discusses the problem with which he began the Preface of Begriffsschrift, namely, that of the classification of judgements. Frege first observes that both the distinction between a priori and a posteriori and that between analytic and synthetic concern not the content of judgements but the justification for making a judgement.
